Brookfield, IL - Director of Public Works

Brookfield, IL (pop. 19,500) The Village of Brookfield is seeking progressive, energetic, highly collaborative candidates for the Director of Public Works position.  Ideal candidates will have well rounded management experience with a focus on Public Works and Capital Improvement Planning.  The new Director will have several unique opportunities in this position:  to facilitate several major construction projects throughout the Village that were recently approved by the Village Board, to conduct an organizational analysis of the department and make recommendations to the Village Manager, and to continue to forge a dedicated group of employees into an empowered team.   The Village of Brookfield is a vibrant, diverse community located 13 miles west of downtown Chicago that offers convenient transportation with numerous community amenities including respected schools, an excellent library, three Metra stations and a parks and recreation system. The successful candidate will have the following qualifications and experiences:

  • A strong commitment to creative problem-solving through teamwork and professionalism, outstanding supervisory and administrative skills, fiscal acumen and highly developed interpersonal and oral/written communication skills. 
  • A demonstrated record of team-oriented style leadership with a comprehensive knowledge of street maintenance, water distribution, parks planning and maintenance, fleet maintenance and forestry and the ability to facilitate the development of a strong solutions based, customer service focused department.
  • An ability to facilitate a mindset change in employees to empower them to form a teamwork approach to departmental goals and responsibilities and to encourage them to offer creative ideas for advancing the mission of the department and problem solving.
  • A bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, public administration, public policy, business administration or a closely related field from an accredited college or university and/or extensive experience in Public Works is desired.   Five to 7 years of progressively responsible public sector public works management, or public administrative or managerial experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience, is desired.  Experience in a larger community at the assistant department head level will also be considered.  A Professional Engineer (P.E.) designation is desired, but not required.
