Fort Worth, Texas (population 854,113) is seeking highly professional and energetic candidates interested in serving as the next Assistant Director-Recreation Division with the City of Fort Worth. Fort Worth is located in North Central Texas and covers 350 square miles (910-km) including Tarrant, Denton, Parker, and Wise counties-serving as the seat for Tarrant County.

Fort Worth is the 15th largest city in the United States and the fifth largest city in the State of Texas. The city has a small town feel, affordable housing and outstanding parks. Fort Worth was the fastest-growing large city in the United States from 2000-2006 and voted as one of “America’s Most Livable Communities”. The city has several universities and many multinational corporations.

The quality of life in Fort Worth is greatly enhanced by a nationally known “Gold Medal” award-winning Park and Recreation Department. The City of Fort Worth Park and Recreation Department is made up of 12,032 acres of parkland and includes 281 parks and recreation facilities. From hike and bike trails to fitness centers, the Park and Recreation Department is a vital part of Fort Worth.

Fort Worth is under a City Manager form of government with an eight single member City Council district and Mayor elected at-large.  The City has a nine person appointed advisory Park and Recreation Board. The Park and Recreation Director serves as the liaison to the Park Board and City Manager. The Assistant Director-Recreation Division is appointed by and reports directly to the Park and Recreation Director and is responsible for the implementation of policy and overall operations of the Recreation Division which has a budget of $8,341,000 and employs 79 full-time and approximately 206 part-time/seasonal employees. 

The City of Fort Worth is seeking an innovative leader to plan, direct and manage the activities and operations of the Recreation Division, including direct management of 14 community centers, a city-wide aquatics program with two pools and a splash pad, historic Log Cabin Village and the 3600 acre Nature Center and Refuge. The Assistant Director-Recreation Division is a high-profile position serving a broad range of internal and external customers and stakeholders.

The next Assistant Director-Recreation Division shall:

  • Be a transformative leader with a strong commitment to excellent customer service and a highly collaborative/team-oriented style combined with a proven successful track record in parks and recreation or a related field.
  • Be an active community leader with a passion for parks, recreation and community service.
  • Be a true professional with an engaging communication style and excellent listening skills.
  • Be a visionary leader to department staff and stakeholders.
  • Be politically astute in interactions without being political.
  • Be a person who leads and motivates by personal example; encouraging high standards of performance, productivity, and ethical conduct from all staff.
  • Be able to provide staff assistance to the Director of Park and Recreation providing regular updates and recommendations; prepare and present staff reports and other necessary correspondence.
  • Have a record of continuous learning, education and training.
  • Have a strong finance/budget background with the ability to find creative solutions to fiscal constraints.
  • Have experience in staff development, mentoring younger staff where appropriate, and planning for succession in key positions.
  • Have a minimum of six years of increasingly responsible experience in parks and recreation service operations or a related field, including three years of progressive management and administrative responsibility.
  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in recreational science, Public Administration or a related field.  Certified Park and Recreation Professional certification is desired.  Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid Texas driver’s license is required.

The City offers a competitive salary and benefits package including a Health Benefit Plan with two levels of PPO coverage. The salary range for the position is $102,308 -120,000 DOQ.
